As long as I could remember I have always had trouble sleeping. My brain never seemed to shut off. Constantly thinking about things I want to try, places I want to go to, what college I want to go to, and all the awkward things I did last week.No matter how hard I tried I could never go to sleep. I eventually had to turn to sleep pills which wasn't good since I was only around ten years old at the time.
My parents would only give me one tablet to help me get to sleep but I would always wake up in the middle of the night and be unable to fall back asleep. We were on a mission to figure out a non-addictive way to have a somewhat normal sleep schedule.
That's when we stumbled upon melatonin which is a hormone the body naturally produces which mainly controls sleep.
After trying a dissolvable melatonin tablet I found that it was my answer. I still felt iffy about depending on something like medicine ( even though melatonin is completely natural) to go to sleep every night.
I did some research and found something called a weighted blanket. Supposedly the weight from the weighted blanket is supposed to give the person using it comfort and support a good night's sleep. Intrigued by the very bold claim I dug a little deeper.
What Is A Weighted Blanket?

What Do They Do?
A weighted blankets' sole purpose is to give the user a sense of being gently squeezed or hugged.
It stimulates the release of a chemical in the brain called oxytocin. This is known as the happy chemical and makes you feel calm and overall happy. The pressure that the weighted blanket gives off can help boost the oxytocin in those who suffer from autism, anxiety, and sensory processing disorder.
Sounds pretty nice, am I right? But why take someone else's word for it? I decided to try it for myself.
My Experience
I got a 15Lb weighted blanket and decided to try it out. To be honest I was a little nervous because my dog sleeps with me and I didn't want the weight to be too much for her so I had her sleep under the comforter. This did upset her but it was in the name of science so... The first challenge to arise was that I can only sleep on my stomach so my flimsy arm had a hard time trying to get the blanket to cover my entire body but eventually I got settled. One thing I'll say is that it is something to get used too. The only way to describe the sensation of using the blanket is as if you have a bunch of blankets on top of you but without getting so hot.
One thing to consider before buying one of these is that they are very expensive. If there wasn't such a big price tag I probably would have swiped the card way sooner. ( Well, my parents anyway, I'm only 13, I definitely don't have that kind of cash just lying around)
So with that being said having tried out the blanket for myself, would I recommend buying one?
Yes! Ultimately I think that if you suffer from insomnia, autism, anxiety, or a sensory disorder and struggle to fall asleep at night I think that it's definitely worth a try! There are many different options out there to choose from but no matter which one you buy it's important to read the manual that comes with it. I just left mine in the bag thinking that " It's just a blanket you put it on and I'll sleep like a baby" but as I was laying there I kept thinking to myself " Is this enough weight?" yet it said clear as day on the manual that it takes a few days for your body to adjust to the feeling of th
e blanket and to give it two or three days.
